Bouches-de-Rhône is the mouth of the Rhône River was created during the French Revolution in 1790. It is surrounded by Gard on the west, Vaucluse on the north, and Var on the east, and by the Mediterranean Sea on the south. here Gentle rolling hills extend for miles over the countryside fragrant with wild herbs, scrub brush and pine forests. Remnants of Roman aqueducts dot the countryside. Here the Alpilles are a striking little mountain range particularly suited to mountain biking where the river flows into the Mediterranean, the land flattens, as you enter the Camargue, a large open marshland that ends at broad sandy beaches. This is another beautiful landscape. In this land between sea and mountains, the climate and the festivals attract visitors from all over the world this exceptional territory is known for its remarkable diversity. The countryside, towns form a rich diversity of culture and history developed over centuries buy the people of this area well worth the visit Here many of the little villages all around offer an excellent selection of restaurants to chose from. This area also has some very well known wines. Just below Les Baux are several famous vineyards to visit. And this area is famous for its olives. Cold pressed olive oil is a speciality locally. Here, too, most of the villages have an outdoor market on a designated day of the week. The market at St. Rémy is particularly well-know, however, even the smaller ones like at Fontvieille or Maussane are worth a visit.
