The slopes of Borovets have a permanent snow cover from November to May. The town has developed into a modern ski resort of high class with luxury hotels, restaurants, and shops It is only one hour’s drive from Sofia, Bulgaria’s capital. Budget airlines now fly direct to Sofia from the UK.

Ski Information Borovets

Borovets still inexpensive by the standards of most resorts. The beautiful wooded setting of the place provides a degree of Alpine-style charm, and trees do hide some of the worst architectural excesses.

Even with the very low prices, including cheap beer, Borovets is not dominated by young people looking to whoop it up. Many of the visitors are families. Evening animation is centred mainly within the Rila hotel, leaving the rest of Borovets to have a low key atmosphere.

THE SKI AREA

Borovets provides the largest ski areain Eastern Europe the 40km of piste are spread over three sectors, two of which are loosely connected.

The two largest have fairly steep skiing. A gondola rises over 1000m from the edge of town to service both the small, high, easy slopes of the Markoudjika sector, and the mainly long steepish Yastrebets pistes that lead back to the same lift station. A little drag lift and path connect the two.

The Baraki sector is within easy walking distance of the gondola bottom station, even in ski boots, starting conveniently in front of the biggest of the village hotels, with several base lifts to choose from. Runs are short, with a ski range of just 550m up to a top station at 1850m.
