The Gastein valley has some of Austria's best and most extensive skiing for intermediates. Badgastein grew up as a spa town with large, austere stone buildings. It is built in a deep gorge, with a steep road winding down from top to bottom. The atmosphere is elegant, but slightly faded rather than pristine. The apres-ski matches the village - none of the Tyrolean-style lederhosen clad knees-ups here.
- Four separate, varied ski areas which together make up one of Austria's largest ski circuses covered by one pass
- Great skiing for confident intermediates, with lots of long, challenging red runs
- Relatively snow sure by the standards of most low-altitude Austrian resorts, with artificial snow and the high Sportgastein ski area as back-up
- Lots of good, atmospheric, traditional mountain restaurants
- Plenty of non-skiing facilities, especially related to its origin as a spa resort
- Unusual setting, architecture and ambience for a ski resort
