Bad Kleinkirchheim is Franz Klammer's home town and is in the far south-east of Austria's mountains, away from the usual skiing destinations.
To attract custom, Bad Kleinkirchheim has developed from a summer spa with a limited ski area into a fair-sized ski resort. The result is modern lifts and a positive attitude towards making improvements. The drawback to having spa origins is that the village is laid out in a sprawling manner, less than ideal for skiers. The most convenient place to stay is close to the Priedrof and Maibrunnbahn lifts. Bad Kleinkirchheim has a sophisticated, relaxed feel, with superb spa facilities. The Bad Kleinkirchheim and St Oswald ski areas are now linked by both lift and piste - the former has two-thirds of the skiing. Both are made up of mostly flattering intermediate runs. Two lifts - a quad chair and a long drag - service the skiing immediately above Bad Kleinkirchheim. Those staying near the tennis centre have a gondola to whisk them up to the far end of Bad Kleinkirchheim area. Two short chair-rides take skiers from central Bad Kleinkirchheim to the St Oswald skiing, while a little drag enables a speedy return. Being east of the Tauern Pass, Bad Kleinkirchheim can have completely different weather from the rest of Austria. In recent years snow reliability has been noticeably better at times and much worse at others. It is sufficiently distant from most other resorts to avoid a massive invasion when its conditions are better; portable snowmaking helps matters when the Situation is reversed. However, it's essentially a low, sunny ski area where late holidays in particular are risky. The top of the skiing is only a little over 2000m.This is not a resort for advanced skiers. The red from the top of the Larchegg drag is a tough run when icy. The World Cup downhill course is surprisingly easy at 'normal' speed. The Franz Klammer run is better, but finishes with a walk to a bus stop.
