Avoriaz is a purpose-built resort perched impressively above a dramatic, sheer rock face. Cars and coaches have to stop at the edge of town, and a horse-drawn sleigh or snow-cat transports skiers and their luggage to the accommodation. The village is set on a considerable slope, but there are ski lifts in town and moving around on foot is straightforward except when pathways are icy (which is not uncommon). Avoriaz usually has snow all over its byways, and being able to ski through it adds to the convenience of the place; it's also one of its great selling points. Pistes, lifts and off-slope activities are close to virtually all the accommodation. Skiing from the door is usually possible.
