Archez lies at a height of 435 metres on the foothills of the Sierra Almijara. It is 51 kilometres from Malaga and 21 from Velez-Malaga, and has a popula?tion of just over 400.
The Parish Church of Nuestra Senora de la Encarnacion is a 16th-century Mudejar building, whilst next to the church is the minaret of a former mos?que. This is an artistic jewel, one of the outstanding monuments of La Axar-qufa.
The date of its construction has been placed in either the 1 3th or 14th centuries, indicating that it is a late-Almohad monument, though built dur?ing the Nazari (Moors of the Kingdom of Granada) period. Towers similar to this, though built at later dates, are found in Tunis and Tremecen, and are believed to have been built by Malagan artists who had emigrated to North Africa.
Various types of decoration adorn this minaret throughout its height of 1 5 metres. Part of the first section, made of brick, is whitewashed.
The second section contains decoration in the form of "sebka drapery", set off by a series of blue and white tiles. The third sec?tion contains blind arches, whilst its use as a Christian tower entailed the con?struction of a belfry at the top. Festivities in honour of the patron saints of Archez, Saint Sebastian and Saint Anton, take place on 17 and 18 January, whilst Our Lady of the Rosary is honoured in mid-August.
