Alpe-d-Huez is one of France's best all-round resorts, with top-quality skiing for all and fine non-skiing facilities. It has some great tough runs (on- and off-piste) set amid spectacular, high mountain scenery. Lower down it has extensive intermediate and beginner terrain too. In good conditions, there are few places to rival Alpe-d'Huez for the extent and variety of the skiing - it's one of our favourites. The slopes get a lot of sun and can get icy. With very little skiing in the trees - white-outs can make skiing impossible and wind can shut the top lifts.

Although Alpe-d'Huez isn't attractive, there are peaceful smaller villages which link with the skiing. Keen skiers should give the Alpe-d'Huez area a go.  Alpe-d-Huez is a large, amorphous resort. It has grown quickly in a seemingly unplanned way since being a venue for the 1968 Grenoble Winter Olympics. Its buildings come in all shapes, sizes and designs. There is even an amazingly futuristic building housing the church (which holds regular organ concerts). There's no real central focus to the resort, though its main street is in the geographic centre and forms quite a main part of the village infrastructure.
