Adelboden has a lot of appeal. It will never be a convenience resort, but its investment in lifts over recent years has been heavy, and has produced great improvements.

Adelboden comes quite close to the chocolate-box image of the Swiss mountain village: old wooden chalets with overhanging roofs line the quiet main street (cars are discouraged), and 3000m peaks provide an impressive backdrop. Adelboden is in the Bernese Oberland, a couple of valleys to the west of the much better-known Jungfrau resorts (Wengen etc). These resorts are within day-trip range, as is the Gstaad area to the west.

Adelboden's ski area is split into six sectors. Lifts from close to the main street take you to three of them. Schwandfeldspitz, directly above the village, is reached by a cable-car-gondola hybrid. The main gondola to nearby Hochsthorn and more remote Geils-Sillerenbuhl starts below the village at Oey (where there is a car park), but a connecting mini-gondola starts from close to the main street. This is much the biggest sector, with long, gentle runs (and some short, sharp ones) from around 2200m down to around 1450m, back towards the village and over the ridge towards Lenk in the next valley. The single drag up Fleckli (1860m) remains unlinked; so does Engstligenalp, a flat-bottomed high-altitude bowl reached by cable-car, 4km south of the resort; and the even more remote, but slightly more extensive, Elsigenalp. At Geils, there is quite a lot of ground to be covered -and expeditions across the valley to Lenk's gentle Betelberg area are possible. Beginners are well catered for.

There are good nursery slopes in the village and at the bottom of nearby sectors. At Geils there are gloriously long, easy blue runs to progress to. The cross-country trails along the valleys towards Engstligenalp and Geils are extensive, varied and scenic. When snow low down is poor, the Engstligenalp cable-car cannot cope. There are pleasant mountain restaurants with terraces and immaculate loos in the Geils sector. Aebi is particularly charming. The village is compact, and there are efficient buses to the outlying areas; the ideal location for most people is close to the main street. The apres-ski is traditional, based on bars and tea-rooms. There is a fair amount for non-skiers, and easy access to a couple of mountain restaurants. The Nevada-Palace hotel has a pool open to the public. There are indoor and outdoor curling and skating rinks.
