Seine-Maritime is in the Normandy derives its name from the Viking Norsemen who sailed up the river Seine in the 9th Century. They settled in Rouen in the region of the Seine Maritime. There are numerous rivers and streams, and seemingly endless quiet country lanes, criss-cross this gentle landscape. And a coastline of over 600km, much of it padded by sand, best known for the Normandy D-Day landings, the Cote d'Albatre has a windswept coastline of chalky cliffs where there are plenty of good pebble beaches people come here to escape city life to relax in the popular seaside resort. There are pretty little Gites nestling in the countryside and holiday homes dotted along the Normandy coast, don’t forget when here sample some of the abundant local seafood with a generous glass of 'calvados' (apple brandy). Here you will find two types of landscape - the dry chalky plateaux which are under intense arable cultivation, and generally flat making this an ideal area for the production of Champagne with huge fields with very few hedgerows. In contrast, there are deep valleys that are carved into the plateaux with ancient woodlands of beech and oak, and small fields and meadows along the streams. The city of Rouen can be found on the banks of the River Seine, it is famous for its impressive Gothic cathedral and, literally, thousands of rustic, half-timbered houses. It was here that Joan of Arc was tried for heresy and burned at the stake. Her story is depicted in the stained glass windows of the striking Église Jeanne d'Arc.
